This course offers the chance to learn or deepen the practice of mindfulness which can be cultivated by bringing awareness to the experience of the body, mind and the world around us in a purposeful and non-judgemental way. The practice of mindfulness helps us to notice when the mind is occupied by thoughts about the past or anticipation of the future and to come back to an awareness of the present moment. This may help you to become less stuck in unhelpful patterns and to feel more acceptance, ease, and ability to cope with stressful situations. Being awake to the present moment can also lead to feeling more strength and balance and a greater appreciation and enthusiasm for life.
What is involved in taking the course
The course is structured around MBSR, which was originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. The course will be run over eight weeks with a weekly class of two and a half hours (we also offer the course over four double sessions, once per fortnight. There is also a one hour orientation session and a full day of silent practice. During the classes you will be invited to take part in a variety of mindfulness meditation practices and group based learning exercises. There will also be daily home practice of one hour; you will have CDs to help you with this. A high level of commitment is needed to get the most out of the course as it requires the daily practice of mindfulness meditation and a willingness to turn towards your experience. This can feel difficult at times but is an important part of the learning and most people find the effort worthwhile.
